Gela Samsonidse began exploring martial arts in his painting in 2019, inspired by his son, who has since devoted himself to the sport professionally. Almost inevitably, this grew into an interest in bodies in motion, especially in dance, and in 2022 he painted the first pictures of a dance series. Since then, Gela Samsonidse has been exploring the parallels and common ground of both worlds – fight and dance – in his art: discipline and control of the body. At times the dynamism and tension of these life-size to larger-than-life bodies seem to discharge right into the room.
